Early excerpt from my upcoming novella ”Haunted”

Blue Creek, Minnesota, October 2013

The leaves scattered in the cool autumn breeze as Elle Jenlin, a small girl (two months shy of her 11th birthday) with soft blonde curls and big brown eyes, skipped through the streets of the small town called Blue Creek.
She was humming one of the eerie children’s playground rhymes that had recently become popular amongst the town’s children. It sent chills down her spine, but for some reason she couldn’t stop repeating it.

'The clown he came in October
Beneath the rain and clouds
He took us to his kingdom
To never more be found'

Looming dark clouds overshadowed the once sunny sky, and a light rain began to fall.
But little Elle, dressed in a raincoat and rain boots, kept walking. She was on her way to school, where her friends, Phoebe Goodwin and Kevin Hayden, were already waiting.
The young ones were excited to start their day.

Suddenly, Elle heard a strange noise coming from the other side of the street.
Startled, she stopped in her tracks and peered into the shadows.
